Cape Ann in Massachusetts is the site of many abandoned granite quarries. The granite industry was famous here. Many hard-working men spent their days mining the granite and then shipping it around the world. The granite from here was used in many iconic structures, such as the Empire State building, and the Brooklyn Bridge. With the invention of cement, the granite industry faded away, leaving the pits to fill with water. Today they are beautiful reminders of the past as well as havens for wild life. This quarry is at Halibut Point State Park in Rockport, MA. One can stand at the edge of the quarry and see across Ipswich Bay.
